Two Vintage Radio Plays Live on Stage to benefit the Shadowland!!!

Rescheduled from last week, this coming Saturday, November 5 at 8pm, the Shadowland is proud to present an evening of live radio plays. Now in its 5th year, this is an enjoyable night out to benefit the Shadowland Theatre. Revisit the classic days of radio, and be sure not to miss the live commercials forlocal businesses.

Featured will be the plays, THE THING IN THE WINDOW by Lucille Fletcher (originally aired in 1946), about a man who sees a body in the apartment across the street, and Ray Bradbury's ZERO HOUR (originally aired in 1950), a terrifying parable about a game called 'Invasion'. Both plays are produced and directed by Ray Faiola.

Radio Drama Classics Scheduled for October 29^th, 8:00pm Benefit Performance

ELLENVILLE, NY, October 20, 2011 – Shadowland Theatre’s second annual Halloween “Terror on the Mike” horror series of on-stage, classic radio drama recreations will feature “Zero Hour,” written by Ray Bradbury, and Lucille Fletcher’s “The Thing in the Window.” Both radio drama classics are being staged Saturday, October 29^th at 8:00pm as a special benefit performance for the Shadowland, Ulster County’s only non-profit, professional theater.

“The Thing in the Window"* is the story of a man convinced that he sees a dead body slumped in a chair in an apartment across the street. Try as he might, he can't get anyone to believe him. Unfortunately, when he tries to report it, an investigation turns up nothing remotely resembling a body. Obsessed with finding the phantom body, he becomes a terrific annoyance to his neighbors. But still he continues to see it from his window.

The radio play, written for Suspense by Lucille Fletcher, was performed in 1946 and 1949. The first presentation starred Joseph Cotten, the second, Robert Montgomery.

The second thriller, Ray Bradbury’s “Zero Hour,”* is a terrifying parable about hometown USA and the growing suspicions of a mother whose young daughter has taken up with a mysterious new playmate who is teaching all the kids on the block an even more mysterious new game, Invasion, which has a group of eight-year-olds rallying around an invisible person who promises them the world - literally. A nightmare in the daylight, to be sure, “Zero Hour” was originally heard on DIMENSION X on June 17, 1950.

Both performances will be directed by Ray Faiola and feature local and regional actors as well as young performers from Shadowland's Acting Academy.

Stepping back in time just like the old radio programs, each radio thriller will include commercials featuring local Ellenville area businesses with original advertising jingles created by John Simon, the former producer of The Band, and member of the Greater Ellenville Jazz Trio. Simon will also provide musical underscoring for the radio dramas.

The story of Clown Shoes is a great one. Jesse Dooley, Berman's beer manager and brand ambassador for Clown Shoes, began improving the store's beer offerings a few years ago. Eventually Gregg Berman, one of the owners, became interested in the craft beers he was bringing in. They started to talk about the idea of making their own beer, and then the realization clicked...they already had a distribution license. They could make a beer and distribute it! They initially contacted a few breweries to work with and Mercury Brewing Company, brewers of Ipswich Ales, stepped to the plate with open arms. Head Brewer Dan Lipke was the perfect match because he didn't merely listen to what Berman and Dooley were saying, he really understood what they wanted out of the brand. As Jesse puts it "Dan has the ability to visualize and then translate our thoughts into great beer!" Based on our time drinking Clown Shoes beer there's a lot of great ideas and a lot of great beer happening.

For a new brewery Clown Shoes has been able to come out with several great products early on. Their Black IPA, Hoppy Feet, and new White Ale, called "Clementine," have both quickly become favorites of ours.

DONATIONS of DIGNITY | 13th Annual County Wide Personal Care Drive

Throughout the month of October, Ellenville Public Library & Museum will be participating in ‘Donations of Dignity’, an annual county wide Personal Care Drive mobilized by the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in Woodstock, NY. People of low/no income cannot use food stamps to purchase personal care items such as toothbrushes, soap, personal hygiene supplies or household cleaning products. For the past 13 years, ‘Donations of Dignity’ has helped our neighbors in need to benefit from the same sense of self-care that most of us take for granted. "Basic needs extend beyond food, shelter and clothing. We all want to feel good about ourselves; approach each day with the sense of renewal that personal care items bring. ‘Donations of Dignity’ offers that opportunity to so many people in Ulster County." Says Jan Whitman, of the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. People can bring new, unused personal care items to the circulation desk at EPL&M during regular hours. At the end of the month, EPL&M will distribute all donations to Family of Ellenville and the Rochester Food Pantry. The fuel for this day was a very warm NW 10-15 MPH wind. I was able to get up very quickly, and have a 2 hour 51 minute flight this day. Many gliders in the air made for an incredibly visual experience overall. I zipped up my harness for the first time, finally, after about 18 flights at Ellenville. No idea why it took so long for me to do this, because when I did, it was great being able to relax in the harness. I also talked/carried a radio for the first time, and had to drink something mid-air for the first time. I need a better drinking system for sure.

Portugal is the seventh largest wine producer in the world. It is impossible to say from what period Portuguese grapes were turned into wine. The probability of in excess of 5.000 BC. is a safe assumption. Even during the Moorish occupation with the ban demanded by the Koran, it is recorded that wine was being made at a Monastery at Lourvão. More modern records show that wine was being exported to England in the early twelfth century. In 1353 Portugal and England signed a treaty allowing Portuguese fishermen to fish off the English coast and thus encouraging Portuguese trade. A later record shows that in 1365 the Mayor of Dartmouth found himself in trouble for seizing a shipment of sweet wine named "Osey and Algarve". The trade in wine became so intense that a British vice-consul was appointed to the town of Viana do Castelo to represent British interests. In 1703 this trade increased even further due to the Treaty of Methuen granting Portuguese wines preference over French for importation into England. Throughout the ages Portuguese exported wine have been referred to using names such as "Bastardo", Charneco" and "Riptage". The names refer back to the region within Portugal of their origin.

It was a great experience building 21-minute flight due to me feeling my strongest thermal to date. Very busy air and strong ground effect on this flight. I felt a bit inexperienced for the conditions, and so I pulled in to get out of the air. I landed safely, although I misjudged the approach based on the conditions. Bad Udo...lol...Life rocks!

I could have taken my first flight at Talcott mountain in Ct. I chose Ellenville, and obviously with 3 total hours of flying between 2 flights, it was a great choice. Pilots at Talcott mountain also had great long flights. So everyone made out well this fabulous summer day.

My first "from the air" hang gliding video. Conditions were marginal, with lots of punchy, snotty little thermals.

Had to figure-8 in lift constantly, sometimes close to the terrain (though not as close as it looks - I always had ample clearance). Only got high enough to 360 a couple of times, but couldn't stay with the thermals. Finally sank out after about 20 minutes.

Shadowland opens 'Medal of Honor Rag' as its final show of season Post-battle drama resonates today

Even though he was only a teenager then, director James Glossman was touched by "Medal of Honor Rag" when it first came out in 1976. "The play parallels the true story of a black soldier (known as DJ) from Detroit serving in Vietnam," says Glossman. Although DJ grew up in a tough neighborhood, he was not a tough guy. He armed himself with a sense of humor.

"His mother said he got through doing the Christian sprint — he turned the other cheek and then ran," Glossman says. But there was no opportunity to run from the ambush that happened toward the end of his tour of duty. That day he was not in his "normal" tank with the five men who had grown to be his buddies. Instead of burning with them, he survived in another tank — to pull their charred bodies from the wreckage. "And then he went crazy," says Glossman. "He wanted to kill. He hunted down and killed 10 or 20 of the enemy. Within 48 hours, he had a medical discharge."

Despite his continued attempts to re-enter the real world and a normal life, DJ spiraled into numbness, and a hospitalization. While in a VA hospital in Pennsylvania, he is eventually seen by a civilian doctor, who brings his own baggage to the table. The setting is stark.

"DJ is funny, but he's scared out of his mind. Will this doctor help? The doctor even says, 'We're playing a game for your life.'"

Although the play focuses on the hour they are together, it actually starts before then and goes beyond. Glossman says it could easily have been three hours long; instead, it's a succinct one hour and 16 minutes.

"It's a cool play about two people with broken things in their lives that they're trying to fix and is full of surprises," Glossman says. "It's not like anything else. "I've been carrying it around in my back pocket for a while," he adds. "Now I have the opportunity to bring back this powerful classic. ... There hasn't been a production on the East Coast in 25 years."

But that changes when the play opens at Shadowland Theatre. McKinley Belcher III portrays DJ; Joris Stuyk is the doctor, with whom the audience enters and leaves the play — without ever knowing his name. The MP is played by Ed Crawford. "The MP is a small part, with huge impact," he says.

Glossman, who is an artistic associate of Shadowland and directs one or two shows there every year, is struck by how relevant the play is today against a backdrop of Iraq and Afghanistan, and how equally relevant it would have been before Vietnam.

"It's stunningly the same," he says. "The terms have changed — shell-shocked, battle fatigue, post-traumatic stress syndrome — and the doctoring is different. But it could just as easily be taking place today. "It's simple, rich and terrifying."

Qi Gong, pronounced as chee-kung, is an ancient Chinese art of self-healing. Qi Gong translates as "Energy Exercise" and dates back to at least 5,000 years. Its whole idea is based on the ideas of Yin and Yang and energy meridians in the body. Qi Gong is what acupuncture came from 2,500 years ago. Tai Chi came from Qi Gong.

Qi Gong consists of series of very simple exercises that are suitable and highly beneficial for people of all ages and abilities. It can be done standing, sitting or even lying down. Qi Gong exercises are always done according to someone's comfort level. It is very good for balance and coordination. It has a calming meditative effect and therefore, can be called a "moving meditation". People feel centered and peaceful after these exercises. Qi Gong serves as a tool for us to switch from sympathetic nervous system ("fight or flight" mode) to parasympathetic nervous system, when we heal the best and feel most creative and at peace with the world and ourselves.

The most important part of Qi Gong is breathing. It helps us to detoxify our body in a very powerful way as most of detoxification happens through breath. By clearing our body of toxins we help our natural healing process and get stronger. Besides, the oxygen that is used for breathing in Qi Gong is used for cellular regeneration, unlike any cardiovascular exercises where oxygen is used to support the movement. Qi Gong is a powerful healing tool for anybody who would like to empower him or herself. No wonder that Olympic champions use Qi Gong as a tool to improve their skills, strengthen their mind and body and ensure results in a competition.

Beer has been made in Belgium since at least the Middle Ages. It is believed today that beer was brewed at some monasteries during this period; however, no written proof exists. The Trappist monasteries that now brew beer in Belgium were occupied in the late 18th century primarily by monks fleeing the French Revolution. However, the first Trappist brewery in Belgium (Westmalle) did not start operation until 10 December 1836, almost 50 years after the Revolution. That beer was exclusively for the monks and is described as "dark and sweet." The first recorded sale of beer (a brown beer) was on 1 June 1861.

In Belgium, beer is more than just a frothy beverage - it is a culture. With over 450 different varieties, many Belgian beers have personalized beer glasses in which only that beer may be served. The shape of each glass enhances the flavor of the beer for which it is designed. This tradition may seem like behavior reserved for wine snobbery, but Belgians take their beer seriously - and with good reason. The country has enjoyed an unparalleled reputation for specialty beers since the Middle Ages. Connoisseurs favor Belgian beers for their variety, real flavor and character.

It is easy to see the depth to which beer has become one with Belgium's culture. What other country has a driving tour through the countryside called the Beer Route? After a day of castle hopping, visitors can stop by one of the local cafés to enjoy some chocolate with their beer, as their worries melt away. Whether you were visiting a brewery, sitting in a café or attending a festival, visitors will remember the first time they tasted their favorite brew.

Belgian Independence Day

The history of Belgium began with the invasion of the Romans, several decades before the birth of Christ, when Julius Caesar conquered Gaul (ancient name of France). Belgium is one of the relatively young countries of the Western European continent having attained its independence only in 1830, less than 200 years ago. Due to its strategic location at the heart of Europe, Belgium was the battleground for the major European powers, from the Romans to the United Kingdom of Netherlands. Here is a brief outline of the different periods in the history of Belgium.

Belgium is located on the western part of the European continent bordering the North Sea, flanked by the countries France and the Netherlands. The Independence Day of Belgium is celebrated on 21 July, the day the nation attained its freedom from the domination of Netherlands in the year 1931. The independence of Belgium received the approval of the European powers at the London Conference of 1830-31. The Independence Day of Belgium commemorates the formal establishment of the independent kingdom and the crowning of Leopold I of Saxe-Coburg. Prince Leopold I of Saxe-Coburg was appointed king of the Belgians on his willingness to support the constitution drawn up by the National Congress.

The road to independence was a long one for the Belgians. Over the subsequent years, several battles were fought, treaties signed and eventually with the commencement of a revolution on 20 January, 1831 Belgium was granted independence from the Netherlands. After attaining its independence and neutrality by the leading European powers, Belgium was the first country in Europe to enjoy rapid economic growth through industrialization. The country further led the continent in the expansion of railways, engineering and coal mining. In the last half century, independent Belgium prospered as a modern, technologically advanced state and also a member of NATO and the EU. Today Belgium is one of the most advanced and affluent commercial and industrial nations in the European continent as well as in the world.

All about health at Aroma Thyme

Green a primary color at Ellenville's bistro!

Walking into Aroma Thyme Bistro, we were immediately and graciously greeted by a cheerful server. She installed us at a table in the cozy, publike dining area. A long wooden bar rested by one wall, and wood paneling and deep booths ran along the opposite wall. The atmosphere was comfortable and casual, like a familiar neighborhood eatery but with a more exotic menu.

See, Aroma Thyme walks an interesting line between cozy family eatery (there's pizza and kids eat free on Tuesdays) and a temple of upscale, sustainable health food.

The appetizer selection included wheat grass juice ($5) and edamame ($5), as well as wine-braised mussels ($7) and Buffalo chicken wings ($8). Burgers are from grass-fed cattle, chicken is organic and bacon is nitrate-free. It's a restaurant certified by the Green Restaurant Association for its commitment to reducing environmental impact — from water usage to takeout containers.

Our server attempted to answer our questions about the ionized water that Aroma Thyme offers. She stumbled a bit over the explanation that ionized water is more alkaline, and couldn't really identify the supposed benefits. The claim is that ionized water acts as an antioxidant in the body — and it's widely debated. It's made in-house and tastes simply like distilled water. We were unable to detect any immediate effects.

We were given a binder full of specials, wine lists and event announcements that was a bit clumsy to pass back and forth. While we nibbled on slices of a rustic wheat loaf and a lemony white bean dip infused with rosemary and thyme, I ordered a Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold ($6), a sweet Belgian-style ale. We sampled the pungent cumin pappadums ($5) with a cilantro pesto dipping sauce and Australian Kobe cocktail franks ($10) with a roasted garlic and horseradish Dijon mustard. The franks were perfect bar food, though they were so numerous that they would be perfect for a larger group, maybe after consuming a few beers.

I selected an entree from the lineup of daily specials, passing up the 56-ounce grilled "long bone" cowboy steak ($97) of locally pastured beef we saw being passed to a nearby table. The grilled pork steak ($26), while not locally sourced, was humanely raised. It was seasoned with smoked black pepper and accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes and sauteed kale from Aroma Thyme's own garden.

The steak itself was a hair's breadth away from overdone, not dry but less juicy than I'd like, and underseasoned. The solution was to add a bit of the kale or potatoes to the forkful — both were delightfully garlicky and buttery. The potatoes had a pleasant, toothsome texture, almost like they were fried before mashing, and were downright addictive.

My friend enjoyed the chicken and bacon pizza ($11.99) on an ultra thin whole wheat crust. Gluten-free crusts were also available. It was a lively medley of flavors — mozzarella, cheddar, red onion and scallions were also among the toppings. A traditional tomato sauce might have added some welcome tartness. The combination of chicken, bacon and scallions was satisfyingly reminiscent of a baked potato. Our server was quite attentive and checked in frequently to see how we were enjoying our meal.

We finished with two desserts: the ice cream flavor of the day ($5) and the dark chocolate fudge torte ($8). It was a tough call to pass up the wild Maine blueberry crisp ($7). The ice cream consisted of Ben & Jerry's vanilla mashed with that day's featured additions, in this instance peanut butter and chunks of house-made brownies. It was adequate, but the peanut butter overwhelmed every other flavor.

I enjoyed a cup of dark, almost chocolatey coffee with the torte, which surprisingly was all raw: raw cocoa, raw coconut butter and raw agave. It was intensely rich, with an aromatic coconut taste underneath the dark, silky chocolate. It was more like eating ganache than a torte.

Even more surprising was a secret our server let us in on: The recipe included "green stuff," as she called it — purees of spinach and broccoli.

It stands to reason that at a place with such a commitment to the health of its patrons and the planet as Aroma Thyme Bistro, even our decadent dessert was good for us on some level.
